With over 20 years in the finance industry, Kim Low has been serving as Beyond Group’sFinancial Controller for nearly 4 years now managing the money for six divisions across the company.  She works to give each division their monthly, quarterly, and annual financials, so that every department head is kept on track.

In addition to ensuring the invoicing is complete and up to date, and the bills are paid, Kim also tracks all the job pricing to make sure that what is spent on a job matches what is being charged for the job. If things aren’t lining up, Kim will help brainstorm ideas to figure out what might be missing.

As part of the Core Team, Kim’s role is to help plan Beyond’s future from the finance side of things.

The Core Team at Beyond Group is made up of people that represent the core values of Beyond: Loyalty, Optimism and Principled. Belong, Create, Mastery

Kim was invited to join this high-level leadership team last year because she was modelling those core values.

Beyond Group’s Chief Financial Officer, Kevin Boschee says Kim’s input is very valuable to the team.

"We valued her perspective because she oversees all of the different divisions as a financial controller.  She really has the best interests of the whole group in mind when she brings her opinions and thoughts to the table,” says Kevin.

Reverse Culture Shock

Before taking on the role at Beyond, Kim owned an accounting firm with a partner. Unfortunately, the business wasn’t working out. It was a stressful time, but fortunately the opportunity at Beyond came up and it has become the best job Kim has ever had.

The most unexpected and the best thing about working for Beyond is what most people have answered when asked the same question: the culture.

Having worked in small businesses and even a couple of family-run businesses in the past, Kim didn’t know what to expect.

“Even though I knew about it ahead of time, I had never experienced this kind of culture in any business,” says Kim.

It can feel uneasy starting a job at a family-run business when you’re not a family member, but at Beyond, you are treated like family from the get-go.

“I was very pleasantly surprised at the culture and at how it works here. It’s an actual family type atmosphere, which is really cool...  it really honestly is. I’ve never encountered whatI have here," says Kim.

Finance Favourite

When it comes to her job, Kim takes pride in keeping Beyond’s books balanced.

“I’m not young anymore, and I've worked at a lot of different places, and I've done alot of different things, and I just have to say this is probably one of my favourite jobs I've ever had,” says Kim.

Kim is a favourite among the office staff too. Beyond CFO, Kevin Boschee has nothing but accolades for Kim.

“I've worked with Kim now for a few years, and honestly, she is amazing. She is very kind, really detail oriented, very skilled, very excellent at what she does,” says Kevin.

“She cares about people, and cares about accuracy and cares about providing useful information to the different department heads about where they're at financially and where they're at as far as making their goals.”

Kim is married and has 4 grown sons, two of which work with her at Beyond. One is in Beyond Group’s lifting division, and the other has started working in firestopping. Having her sons work alongside the same team has been a good experience.

“I was a little apprehensive at first. You just never know, but they're good kids, and they work hard, and they're doing really, really well,” says Kim.

When not at work, Kim is also a mom to her two fur babies.

"I've become a doggy mom now because my sons have grown up and so they don't need a mama so much.”
